teddy bear birthday present
Claudia and Muffel 1975

Muffle had been Claudia's confidant and silent protector for as long as she could remember. Her father had given her the teddy bear for her third birthday. A bear with soft, caramel-colored fur, white dungarees and hopeful beady eyes. Muffle witnessed Claudia's first day at school, her teenage tears and the moment she walked down the aisle on her wedding day. Through all the difficulties, Grouchy was the only one who heard Claudia's quiet whispers and thus all her worries and dreams.

However, when Claudia's marriage began to falter, Muffel was more than just a source of comfort - he involuntarily became a soldier in a bitter marital war. On one particularly turbulent evening, a heated argument between Claudia and her husband escalated. In her husband's efforts to protect Claudia from his anger, Muffel was caught in the crossfire and thrown across the room in the midst of the chaos. That night, Grouchy disappeared and his absence left a hole in Claudia's heart.

Muffel's journey began in that dark, cold corner of the living room where he had been dumped. The next morning he was found by a housekeeper who thought he was an old toy. She left him by the side of the road and it wasn't long before a curious street artist, fascinated by the bear's worn but dignified appearance, picked him up. Thus began the first stage of Muffel's long odyssey.

The artist, a free spirit named C. E. Goldstern, travelled across Europe and the world with her easel and paints in tow. Muffel, wrapped in a sturdy scarf to protect him, accompanied Mrs Goldstern on her forays through Parisian alleyways and across sunlit squares in Barcelona. Under Goldstern's care, he saw vibrant works of art come to life and studiously listened as she spoke passionately about colours and emotions, slowly beginning to reclaim a piece of living life through her art.

The years passed like the Seine, and Muffel was swept away on another adventure when Mrs Goldstern decided to introduce him to a young family she had met in Athens. The parents were migrant workers from Africa, and their three children clung to Muffel like a lifeline amidst the ever-changing landscape of language and culture. Through their eyes, Muffel witnessed the resilience of the human spirit, even in times of great uncertainty, when the family was uprooted once again and sailed across the Aegean Sea to Istanbul.

In Turkey, Muffel accidentally slipped away during a hasty disembarkation. He found himself under a bookshelf in a small café in Sultanahmet, surrounded by the stories of strangers told in different languages. Over time, he listened to the stories of nostalgia and adventurousness, of heartache and joy, of old and young travellers. Muffel soaked them all up, his material was an atlas of the common human experience.

Eventually, the owner of the café became aware of him and sold him to a curious collector who specialized in eccentric relics. This collector, Y. Roth from New York, was a culture enthusiast who loved to collect old, lost or unique objects in order to get to the bottom of their meaning. Muffel became part of a colorful exhibition - a spectacle of nostalgia - and traveled to various cultural festivals across Europe, America and Asia. In the bustling streets of Tokyo, near the Shibuya intersection, Muffel was suddenly overcome with the urge to continue his journey on his own. He began at the impressive temples in Kyoto, looped through the food markets of Seoul, explored Shanghai and finally ended up in Beijing. Back in Chemnitz, he would never have imagined how many cultures and stories the world had in store. He incorporated the magic of all these faraway places into his seams.

Though it seemed that sometimes Muffel had lost his once noble sense of direction, he had never truly forgotten his true aim. An unyielding string tied him to Claudia's former warm embrace, a conviction he held in every seam of his bruised contours. As if fate had woven plans into the threads of time, one day in 2018 someone recognised Muffel at an arts fair in Beijing. An elderly teacher couple from Chemnitz, who were travelling through and had a keen eye for distinctive European treasures, knew that they had seen Muffel in a photograph before. An old photo of their friend Eva, Claudia's mum, and in this photo Claudia was also a little girl holding Muffel, her new cuddly toy, tightly in her arms.

Communication with her friend Eva wasn’t possible, but Muffel's path was finally mapped out. Muffe didn’t know for certain, but he could assume that Claudia was in Berlin. And even if not, Muffel knew that it was now time to get back home - back to Claudia. Unfortunately, the road and the journey to come was still arduous and would involve countless hitchhiking opportunities, trains and lorries from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Moscow, Minsk, Warsaw and finally Berlin.

At the hoped-for destination in Berlin, life had shaped Claudia in a similar way to the stories Muffel had heard: stories of heartbreak that turned into personal triumph and independence.

On August 21, 2024, in the soft glow of the Berlin sunrise, Claudia headed to a corner café in Friedenau shortly after 7 a.m. to grab a quick coffee to go for herself and her daughter. It was to be the start of a trip to the seaside with her children. To Claudia's surprise, she discovered her muffle sitting at a terrace table. A relic marked by time and yet adorned by history. With tears in her eyes, she finally hugged him again and felt the familiar fabric on her fingers. Muffle's once flawless exterior now bore the honorable scars of his journey - a testament to resilience, companionship and the timeless nature of love.

As Claudia held Muffel, she whispered stories to him that he had been waiting for so long. Her silent witness and advisor had finally returned. They sat together again at last, in peaceful reunion, bound by the familiar comfort of shared dreams and the extraordinary journey that, inevitably, had led them back together.
